A long battle and a short one
Having been thrashed by Sharrock Junior, it was on to Sharrock Senior. Tim accepted my Lunars as an appropriate opponent for Kallyr, we set up some bad going and hills, and set to, defending Whitewall. There were deployment problems as I tried to shuffle sideways to match his setup, and a flyer did a great jof od disruoting things before dying again, as did a Lurker on the other flank. Meanwhile his Hero General tried to get round to Whitewall, with riders in tow. A hastily shifted Flyer sat in a cornfield and ambushed them. The Hero General heroically chased it into bad going, and it fled, and returned, and fled, and returned, and..... meanwhile Kallyr headed in that direction with the intention of challenging the General to a duel, but had to go bac and sort out the collapsing left flank. The right flank was held up by sneaker and shooters, the centre was Barkered by a flyer, the rest was reshuffling.
Eventually the warband sorted themselves out, and Kallyr led them in a charge. We were up to the end of time, with many troops lost and no clear winner, but then in the final moments, the Lunar right crumpled before the Vingan onslaught. One Rider reached the gates of Whitewall but was driven off. Orlanthi victory - just.

Next - Steve Harris and the Last of the Mohicans. Warband v. warband. His Hero sneaked round the back towards my stronghold, and this time the Flyer, without bad going to help, couldn't stop him. The only other combat was the other flyer being chased off by his Magician.

Episode 150: Plumbing New Depths

Episode 150: Plumbing New Depths

If one of your players is a certified expert on something that will be coming up in your game, the best thing to do to avoid them nitpicking your valiant, yet ultimately doomed, attempts at realism is to recruit them to your purpose.

Then they can defend you against the stings and barbs of the other players. And sometimes you end up with just plain cool stuff coming out of it too.

A volume of visages
One bit of self observation from 'Only Connect'. I realised how slow I am in word games, jumbled-up letters and such.

As a corrective, I have sunk myself into a Facebook addiction: 'Pathwords'. Must admit that I have been beaten ragged every time by [info]lexin, although my personal score has slowly and steadily improved. Tried a few tentative rounds with another FB application 'Bubblewords', looks like fun, but it will be a while before I can offer other FB inhabitants a real contest.

Two short battles
Last night, my Easter Chicks were challenged by young Charlotte. It had to be a short game because Dave and I had booked a table for 15 min later. She deployed, she moved. I rolled a 6 and split into 3 groups. AHG and 2 wingmen hit her flyers, two flyers hit her shooter, AH and wingmen hit her unsupported Airboat General. Two attacks bounced, but the general died.

First real game this morning, Kallyr faced Benedict commanding Richard's morocanth. Magician, knights... nor ideal against my flyers, hero-general and flyers, but we can cope with careful deployment. My Lurker did a lovely job of breaking up the Warband before she died (what was that tree doing in Prax anyway?), but rolling that many 1s (i never got anything higher than a 3) was not something I could cope with. The flyers never moved, and the second time the Morocanth Sorceror tried to ensorcorel Kallyr, he succeeded. There's a story there, I'm sure of it

Can pesticide exposure of unborn children make them obese?
It's only the result of a single study, so one should be cautious of going overboard with the result, but one of the possible reasons for the rise in obesity is the exposure of unborn children to a range of pollutants including pesticides and many others (including, rather worryingly, the plastics used to make bottles for babies' milk).

Fried
We got up early for the SpaceTime Theater rehearsal this morning which went quite well, then grabbed lunch with the cast. This evening, [info]daisy_knotwise wanted to grab a decent burger, so we went down to Fuddrucker's and thence to the Fry's across the street where we bought a Winnie the Pooh book and DVD for Katie and an SD card on an opportunistic basis. (That is to say, it was on sale.)

And at this point, Katie is in bed and we are really tired.

If I am going indulge . . .
. . . Making homemade pizza using my favorite focaccia bread bread recipe is not a bad way to do it. The other day, Simon wanted Pizza Hut pizza really badly. And I thought "Gee! It's been a really long time since I've had pizza. I'll have a slice as an indulgence today."

I didn't even make it through half the slice. It was very greasy.

Either A) Pizza Hut pizza just isn't as good as it was when I was in high school (Priazzo anyone? YUM.) or B) perhaps I don't enjoy pizza anymore.

Tonight, I ruled out answer B).

It was a fairly simple pizza.

1) Crust made with three parts Better for Bread flour to one part wheat flour, olive oil, yeast, salt, and water. (Next time, I'm adding rosemary like I used to.) Baked lightly before the toppings were applied, then baked again.
2) Fresh Basil from the garden sliced thinly and put directly on the crust.
3) Classico Spaghetti sauce (Yes, I should probably research a sauce too, but I *like* Classico)
4) Part skim, Low Moisture Mozzarella Cheese
5) Mild Italian Sausage cooked before it went on the pizza and into the oven.

I ate two slices of pizza (and a few sausage bits that teleported into my mouth -- Honest!) I can't eat like that very often, because fried sausage has a lot of fat in it. (Mmm fat.)

The crust was beautiful and non greasy -- much unlike a certain pizza franchise's. Truly, it was the best part. Warm, light airy, crusty on the outside, soft and silky on the inside (but fully cooked).

Yay! Indulgence. :-D

His: Barbie guitar (which he LOVES). Plays Hannah Montana songs if you put batteries in it. Has strings to strum even without batteries.

Mine: Limited edition '68 Telecaster reissue - Pink Paisley - like the one James Burton played when he was playing with Elvis. Has no batteries, so doesn't play Hannah Montana. Also has strings.

Not seen - Fender Blues Jr. amp. This combo completely rocks. Not partially... completely.

Unshelved News: Iconic

Thanks to Jim Demonakos (blog/twitter) for designing our favicon - that little green "U" icon that appears to the left of our URL in your address bar. Jim puts on the increasingly successful Emerald City Comic Con but apparently our first-nonexistant-then-lame favicon bugged him enough that replacing it became the most important thing on his plate. I'll have to figure out other ways to bug him into doing free work for us.

Turning a Windows 98 box into a VM
Nana Pam has a new computer. Well, a newer computer, from http://www.computerresale.co.uk/refurbished.htm (not one of the ones currently listed). It has XP Pro on it.

My task is to copy everything useful off her current, Windows 98, machine.

That probably means copying "My Documents" (happening as I write), and making sure she has a copy of Word Read more... )

But it might be quite nice to turn the whole machine into a VM, for playing old games that don't work even in compatibility mode, and in case anything else that was on it is ever useful.

Post Postcards Of Where You Live!

Whereas I usually despise memes from the bottom of my heart, here I'm actually trying to kick-start one.

Well, I don't like those "personal info memes" that are like the equivalent of the "my mates books" we had in school, cross bred with the TMI beast. Just as those "writers' blocks prompts" you can get from LJ, if anyone would really be inspired by an idea and elaborate on it in a proper, wordy post, that'd meet my expectations of blogging, but just answering random questions with one word or sentence - honestly, no person in the world is automatically so awesomely interesting to anyone else but themselves that doing such a meme would be a good idea in the first place. Thank you for using cut-tags when you really have to do a 50 questions meme.

O.k., so what am I up to besides giving you a piece of my misanthropy once again?

One of my flisters,
[info]caramelapples11 from Malaysia, answered the question about what her country is like with a picture post that is just breathtakingly beautiful.

I strongly suspect that it's way easier to find postcard quality motifs if you live somewhere like Malaysia than, let's say, suburban Germany. Still, I think it is a great challenge to find beauty in your familiar environment and I'm looking forward to roaming the neighbourhood, local landmarks and nearby region to capture the spirit of home from its best side. I would immediately start looking for sites if the weather right now wasn't so counterproductive. As soon as we'll have a good afternoon/weekend I'm going to do the postcard picture meme myself, though.

So, dear flist, go for it! Post postcard quality pictures of where you live. Imagine stocking a local kiosk's postcard rack with cards a tourist would choose to write home. Of course you can post older pictures if you already have some meeting the requirements. Indulge!

Gene's life: Vampires help me avoid politics

Spent the week avoiding bloodsuckers of a different variety by reading Vampire Zero, the sequel to the sequel to David Wellington's first vampire novel (featured in an Unshelved Book Club a few years ago) 13 Bullets. Wellington is my favorite horror writer -- I could not put this book down. The new book doesn't come out until October, but you can still read 13 Bullets for free online (it's also available in a handy paper edition at finder bookstores everywhere).

And when the poll was cast, the winner was Mister James K. Polk, Napoleon of the Stump
posted by Dan Guy
Three weeks until the Library of Congress National Book Festival! I hope that everyone within easy commuting distance* is planning to attend. It's sure to be a fun day, just for the festival itself, plus the forecast calls for a light dusting of hijinks and shenanigans! There will be cake. I may wear a disguise.

UPDATE: Eden helpfully points out on the LJ feed that this is also an excellent opportunity to see the Jim Henson Smithsonian exhibit.

* Since it is on the Mall in D.C. there are many public transportation opportunities, including my regular standby: the $20 Bolt Bus that departs hourly between D.C. and NYC, Philadelphia, or Boston. The buses are new, clean, and have free wifi. You could take it down in the morning and then back up in the evening with a minimum of fuss.

I have received quite a few emails from people having problems with the free NEVERWHERE ebook, but have no way of knowing what percentage of the overall number of downloaders these emails represent.

With that in mind, I conduct the following unscientific poll. Please click on the option that best describes your interaction with the ebook:

  • Option 1: I did not attempt to read it.

  • Option 2: I read it online.

  • Option 3: I successfully downloaded it by clicking the button and was able to read it.

  • Option 4: I successfully downloaded it using the posted work-around and was able to read it.

  • Option 5: I successfully downloaded it using the posted work-around but was unable to open it.

  • Option 6: I attempted to download it, got an "ebx.etd" file instead, and gave up.

  • Option 7: I am running linux.

  • Option 8: I am unwilling to install new Adobe software to read it.

See results.

The Open Rights Group, of which Mr. G is a patron, is trying to reach 1,500 supporters by December. They are nearly two thirds of the way there. You can help by joining, and/or posting this widget on your site or blog:

And now, your daily tab-closing:

  • For those in Denver, Tony Award winning actress Deanna Dunagan will be headlining "Stories on Stage" tomorrow (Sunday), reading Mr. G's story "Chivalry". If you click on that link, there is an audio interview in which she explains why she selected that story.

  • Who Killed Amanda Palmer? goes on pre-sale Monday!

  • For those outside the US who have found themselves unable to download Neverwhere, HarperCollins also offers The Neil Gaiman Reader. This is not the book of essays of the same name edited by Darrell Schweitzer, but rather a PDF containing the first few chapters each from Neverwhere, American Gods, Stardust, and Smoke & Mirrors. It also requires Adobe Digital Editions. (HarperCollins previously offered a version which worked with regular Adobe Reader. If you're on linux you can probably find it online by googling.)

  • There is now a Graveyard Book shirt available from NeverWear featuring artwork by Mr. G himself! Available in S, M, L, XL, XXL, and girl's baby doll sizes.

And lastly, because several of you have asked, let me go on record as saying that none of these are me, nor are these. And while I'm on the subject, these are not the web elf. Though this appears to be some fanfic inspired by her?

rehearsal & stuff
Rehearsed with guitarist Dave Kirk. Then it was all phone calls, gig dates sorting, food shopping, Yttrium CD printing and packing for Weyfest,

Sold a download copy of Alien Salad Abduction at CDBaby - I;ve made all my albums quite cheap to download from there.

Got the new Brian Wilson album Lucky OId Sun which I saw him play live last year. Nice - not all top drawer but glad he's doing anything and the big ballad Midnight is Another Day is gorgeous. Soooo many hero(in)es with new CDs this year - Richie Havens, Lydia Kavina, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Brian Wilson, Terje Rypdal, Barbara Buchholz, Pamelia Kurstin, Terry Riley, Markus Stockhausen - quite dizzy making.

A fear that Weyest is going to be a long drive to play in a wet forest. Ho hum...

Flea Control, Part 3: Pick Your Battle(s) to Win the War: Around and About the Home
Sorry for the delay getting this posted - Life has a way of interfering with plans, sometimes (and with kids, you can make that most of the time).

OK, in Part 1, I reviewed the basic flea life cycle. Part 2 covers taking care of your pet. A word of advise here - my experience has been mostly dealing with cats and dogs. Other pets can (and do!) have flea problems - yes, this includes ferrets and rabbits for sure. I suppose in a really bad case, most anything mammalian will satisfy the flea. If you have reptiles or birds, you're off the hook, AFAIK - at least for fleas - but they have their own problems, and vets who deal with them. The main problem with having "exotic" pets is that you're a minority market, as far as the companies that make the flea control products are concerned, and you probably won't find anything labeled for your special pet. If you've got a problem, please contact the vet you work with (you do have one, right?).

OK, on to treating the house (and yard).

Treat the house - what to use )
Treat the house - how to hints )

Yard treatment is similar to house treatment; make sure you concentrate on areas suitable for the immature fleas (under bushes and trees, up against the house, in shaded mulched areas. You can treat the whole yard, but you generally aren't going to find fleas out in the middle of the sunny, dry lawn.

But I don't want to use those nasty chemicals! )

My Last HP Laptop
My last HP laptop (with apologies to [info]bedlamhouse) is sitting downstairs incapacitated with two keys that are no longer going to stay attached to the keyboard. This is the third or fourth time that this laptop has lost keys, because the attachment is just that flimsy. Had I realized how lousy this keyboard is, I never would have bought the machine, certainly not to reside in the same household with small children, the elder of whom managed to detach four to five keys with one swipe of her hand this afternoon while I was at work.

My previous HP laptop had a much more stable keyboard. Unfortunately, it had a bogus design for the power connector which eventually led to it breaking loose from the motherboard. I passed that one along to someone who worked in a place with the appropriate soldering tools to try to fix the beast. I think he succeeded.

Mercifully, the new keyboard isn't that expensive. The several hours of swearing that it'll take to install the new keyboard, well, that's a different story.

Surfacing once more
to tell you that I actually have a confirmed date for one of the televisual quizzes...

Regret that this will apply only to folk in the UK, or who otherwise have access to BBC4.

So, I will be part of the Birkbeck Alumni team that will appear on 'Only Connect' on Monday the 22nd of September at 8.30 in the evening. As I said, BBC4 is the channel, the first episode of the brand new quiz goes out a week on Monday (the 15th), followed the next week by ourselves. Ourselves being Ken Brown, Catherine Arbuthnott and yours truly. I reckon it should be a diverting little show, based as it is on the principle of perceiving arcane connections rather than coughing up gobbits of data...
