World book day prep

Wand case 1
Originally uploaded by Oreouk
Tomorrow is world book day and Alex (along with zillions of other children, I'm sure) has decided he wants to go to school dressed as Harry Potter, despite me lobbying for Tintin (much easier and many fewer people doing it!). So, glasses, check; face paint for scar, check; black goo to colour and style hair, check.

Robes definitely much more of a problem. I am not much in the seamstress line and I could do a cloak but definitely not robes. In the end I caved and bought a set off E-bay, nabbing it at the last minute while my Mum sat by and told me how I'd gone and broken some other child's heart by doing so. Fortunately it got from Wales to here in a day *and* I was working from home today and thus here to receive it.

Wand gave pause for thought. Alex pulled out his plastic black and white traditional stage magician's wand but that did not appeal, so I cut down some dowling, used my pen knife to give it a more appropriate shape and my pumpkin carving dremel to carve some grooves in it, stained and varnished it and we have a wand.

But then I got to thinking about how he would carry said wand around at school all day, and how long (or not) it would take for it to get lost, and started thinking about making a case for it to go in. And thus the case in this picture, which has a strap that will go over his head and one arm, so it hangs (hopefully) more or less at his hip without getting too much in the way. Given how long it took me to make this, it's a jolly good thing I didn't try and make the robes, or even a cloak! There's another picture on Flickr, plus one of the wand. I took it using the webcam on my laptop, since what else is tech for if not to gratuitously abuse?

There will be pictures taken of the full ensemble tomorrow, though getting them onto the net may take longer.

Edit: There are photos of Alex over on Phil's Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/39048245@N00/

That looks very like the wands I made last summer to sell at Sectus! I made a variety of handles. Though I didn't have a good penknife or a Dremel - I just used my ordinary drill with the circular sanding attachment. My neighbours must have hated me - I made 15 of the things...

Pretty much - what you did was certainly the inspiration for getting the Dremel out. It hand a tendency to skid about though - I'd probably have been better off with someone else to hold the wand, or maybe with a vice. Still, it looks cool and that's what matters. Thanks for the inspiration :-)

A drill-stand would have been more useful for me - I ended up with the drill braced across one thigh, mostly, so I could hold the wand with my other hand (I switched sides once or twice!).

I look forward to seeing the full ensemble in due course!

Thank you :-) I have to say I'm quite happy with the results achieved this morning, though the hair would have been messier if Alex had had the patience for it! http://www.flickr.com/photos/39048245@N00/

Oooh, excellent! Though I see what you mean about the hair, it's... very... flat... ;) But he looks great. :)

Grin. You should have seen the bath last night when he washed it out - it was so black we couldn't see the bottom of the bath! Fortunately it came out easy, just floating off his hair when he dunked :-)

He emjoyed the costume very much though did comment to me bitterly about the number of people in movie based costumes (I was adamant that it had to be a book character, and wouldn't even let him be Spiderman because he's not read any Spiderman, only watched it, so it doesn't count).

*chuckle* I'm with you on that. Gotta be a character one has actually *read*. Plus, as HP he got to wave a wand round & cast spells, as spiderman, well, casting spiderwebs would've been so much more difficult to even hint at...
As far as the dye - so long as it doesn't stain the bathtub... ;)

I'll bet he's one of the best Harry Potters, that looks really good all put together like that.

Thank you :-)

It's all in the accessorising, I tell you. He had a blast waving the wand around and casting spells, though he has detention with Dady for casting unforgivable curses on his teacher...
